Major Changes Loom for Meta’s (Facebook) Fundraising Tools in Europe
Important Update for Charities in the European Economic Area
Meta has just announced significant changes to its fundraising tools across the European Economic Area (EEA). Effective from July 1, 2024, charities will no longer have access to these tools on Facebook and Instagram platforms. This decision affects various features such as Facebook Donate ads, fundraisers, donate buttons on posts and pages, and the use of the fundraiser API.
Here’s what you need to know about these changes:
- Facebook Donate Ads and Fundraisers: From April 25, 2024, new Facebook Donate ads will not be supported, and existing ads will stop automatically. Similarly, the ability to create or donate to fundraisers via Facebook e-money accounts will be restricted to those who have previously used this method, and by July 1, 2024, these features will be entirely unavailable in the EEA.
- Charity Manager and Reporting Tools: Access to features such as insights, supporter lists, and automated thanking in the Charity Manager will cease. Although limited transaction reports will still be provided, the full spectrum of fundraising data and tools will no longer be accessible.
- Payouts and Financial Management: Charities need to prepare for final payouts by July 15, 2024. Meta advises taking necessary actions to ensure all funds are appropriately processed and any outstanding issues are addressed before this date.
Implications for Charities This change poses challenges for many charities relying on these platforms for fundraising. The removal of these tools could lead to a significant reduction in visibility and donations unless alternative strategies are deployed.
